Introduction

The Vietnam War is considered one of the most controversial events in the history of the United States of America. The war lasted from 1959 - 1975 in an attempt to contain Communism. However, one of the most important aspects of the Vietnam War was the music created both inside and outside of the United States. The music of this era helped define both a nation and a generation. I have compiled three playlists to help the reader further understand how music made such a powerful impact on a population during the Vietnam War.

The first playlist is “Time,” which includes songs produced and sung by Americans roughly around the Vietnam War era. The genre of this playlist is extensive, as it spans from folk to Motown to rock n’ roll. Most of the songs are ones of protest, the draft, and peace. Some main musicians include Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, and The Doors.

The second playlist is “Space,” which includes songs produced outside of the United States as well as songs produced in the United States well after the war is over. These songs were selected because of the time period during which they were sung, and how people all across the world were viewing the Vietnam War. Songs produced after the War, such as Billy Joel’s “Goodnight Saigon,” are included to show the impact left behind on Americans after the Vietnam War had ended. The playlist ranges from reggae to dance to rock n’ roll. The prominent musicians include The Rolling Stones and John Lennon, both with roots from England.

The final playlist is “Modern,” which are songs written in the past couple of years to portray views about the military or war, as well as covers of songs listed in the first two playlists. These songs are either directly about the Vietnam War, such as “I Have Seen The Rain” by Pink, or about modern wars, such as State Radio’s “Camilo.” These songs are spread across multiple genres, including country, pop, and rap. Each song was selected for what I believe is the message that each song spreads about the current situation we find ourselves in today.

Please enjoy each song that is provided through these playlists, as they can be listened to by simply clicking the orange links.
